The fate of an abandoned dog has touched many hearts after she was found alone in a parking lot with a heartbreaking note attached to her collar.
A Shocking Discovery in a Parking Lot
On February 14, Valentine’s Day, a dog was discovered in the parking lot of a Meijer supermarket in Kent County, Michigan. She was alone, with no owner in sight, but she had a plastic bag attached to her collar containing a handwritten note.
The message, simple yet heartbreaking, read: "My name is Rukey. Please help me, take me home."
Taken in by a Caring Shelter
After being found, Rukey was taken to the Kent County Animal Shelter (KCAS), where she received immediate care and attention. The shelter staff quickly described her as a sweet and affectionate dog with a gentle personality.
In a Facebook post, the shelter reached out to the person who had to leave Rukey behind:
"To the person who had to make the heartbreaking decision to let her go—please know that Rukey is safe and deeply loved by our staff. We can only imagine how difficult this choice was for you, and we sincerely hope you find brighter days ahead."
A Call for Help for Struggling Pet Owners
KCAS took this opportunity to remind the community that help is available for those facing difficult times. Shelter director Angela Hollinshead encouraged local residents to seek assistance if they are struggling to care for their pets:
"If you're having trouble feeding your pet or providing for their needs, please reach out. We can offer food, connect you with social services, and help find other resources to support you."
She also emphasized the importance of kindness and compassion, reminding everyone that we often don’t know the silent struggles others are facing.

A Brighter Future for Rukey, the dog abandoned in parking lot
Thanks to the shelter’s efforts, Rukey is now safe and waiting for a loving family to give her the home she deserves. KCAS will continue to provide updates on her adoption and hopes she will soon find a warm and caring home.
While this story highlights the hardship that some pet owners face, it also serves as a reminder that there are always alternatives to abandonment. The Kent County Animal Shelter remains committed to its mission: helping keep pets and their families together whenever possible.
