Scrim the dog, captured once again after another daring escape in New Orleans

Scrim, the Runaway Terrier, Captured Once Again After Another Daring Escape in New Orleans

Scrim, the spirited terrier from New Orleans who became infamous for his relentless escapes, has been captured once again after a dramatic three-month adventure. Known as the city’s most "ungovernable dog", Scrim had already earned a reputation for evading capture on multiple occasions, but this latest episode added even more intrigue to his story.

A Daring Leap to Freedom

The wild journey began in November when Scrim, temporarily staying with Michelle Cheramie at her Zeus’s Place animal rescue, managed to break free once again. He chewed through a second-story window screen and leapt a staggering 13 feet to freedom, landing in a driveway below. At the time, Scrim was still recovering from a previous six-month escape the year before, during which he evaded his adoptive family, braving hurricanes and enduring summer heatwaves exceeding 100°F while living rough in the city.

Scrim the dog : a Survivor Against All Odds

The story of Scrim’s earlier escape was harrowing. He was eventually found in October, battered and bruised, with abrasions, a missing piece of ear, several missing teeth, and wounds that suggested he may have been shot with an air pellet gun. But despite all these hardships, Scrim’s spirit remained unbroken, and he continued to defy the odds as one of New Orleans' most legendary escape artists.

Tracked, Hunted, but Always One Step Ahead

Michelle Cheramie, who had taken Scrim in as a foster dog, shared the news of his latest capture on Facebook on Tuesday, expressing relief and gratitude that Scrim had survived yet another challenging ordeal. She posted a simple but powerful message: "We got him!" Scrim was in stable condition and was being assessed at a local animal hospital by “Dr. Joe” in Metairie, a suburb of New Orleans. Cheramie promised to share the full details of Scrim’s latest adventure once she had time to process everything, noting that Scrim was receiving the care he needed after his latest ordeal.

The Great Search and the Social Media Frenzy

Cheramie had previously described the moment when Scrim escaped in November as "the most unbelievable scenario I’ve ever had to deal with." It became clear almost immediately that tracking Scrim would be no easy task. His GPS collar died just hours after he bolted, leaving search parties, equipped with nets and tranquilizer darts, to comb the city in search of the elusive dog. Despite their best efforts, Scrim seemed to be one step ahead at every turn.

Throughout his odyssey, Scrim developed a massive following on social media, where fans shared memes, theories, and sightings of him across various neighborhoods in New Orleans. Scrim’s escapades even caught the attention of the city council, who recognized his "resilience" during a special ceremony at city hall in November. This attention only fueled the public’s fascination with the dog, who had become somewhat of a local hero, admired for his tenacity and survival instincts.

Too Smart for Popeyes and Traps

However, despite the extensive search efforts and the dog's newfound fame, Scrim was largely impervious to conventional methods of capture. His favorite bait – locally adored Popeyes fried chicken – did not sway him, nor did beef tripe, a local delicacy often used to lure stray dogs. This made Scrim even more of a mystery, and his whereabouts became a subject of constant speculation on a dedicated subreddit created in his name.

What’s Next for Scrim?

Cheramie has reassured everyone that Scrim will be placed in a more secure environment once he is discharged from the animal hospital. In an interview before Scrim's capture, she mentioned her plans to replace his old GPS collar with an Apple AirTag to ensure that he stays within reach in the future.

For now, though, Scrim’s survival and return are a testament to the remarkable resilience of this little terrier who has captured the hearts of many. With his adventures now behind him, Scrim will hopefully find peace in a new, safer environment that will allow him to live out the rest of his days without the constant need to escape.
